Winter is coming! As the nights grow longer and the days grow shorter, I think of the colds and flus that are going to start coming. Some already have them! While our immune systems do an incredible job defending against these illnesses, sometimes, they just aren’t quite enough, and we get sick.
Luckily, there are few easy ways to keep your immune system up and running! With the added help, hopefully you’ll be able to keep this illnesses at bay this fall and winter! Here are some ideas to help strengthen and build your immune system and keep you and your family from getting sick.
Avoid Refined Sugar
Refined sugars, what is usually used in most foods, prevents white blood cells from being effective. Eating sugar makes your white blood cells 40% less effective in killing germs. A lot of times, they even use bleach during the process to make it white. Try to avoid them at all costs!
There are a lot of alternatives for your sweet tooth. Honey and agave can be better sweeteners, while dried fruits can make great snacks. It’s hard to kick a sugar habit, I know! But, you can do it!
It is believed that Vitamin C helps to increase the production of white blood cells, which are vital to fighting disease and infection. Our bodies are unable to produce, or even store, this essential vitamin, so it’s important that you get sufficient amounts daily.
Citrus fruits are a great source as well as tomatoes, but there are also many vegetables that are rich in Vitamin C: onions, bell peppers, brussel sprouts and dark leafy greens. Try out Vitamin C in multiple forms, whole fruits and veggies, or in smoothies and juices!
According to Harvard Medical School, there is a link between a strong immune system and regular exercise. You may want to try Yoga, cycling, running, or even just taking a brisk walk to get some exercise. These practices are easy and, when done regularly, can help to strengthen your immunity.
It’s very important to keep our Gastrointestinal tract healthy. Most aspects of our immune systems are located in the intestines, as well as the rest of the digestive system. Kefir or yogurt are great probiotic foods to help keep your gut healthy.
Enjoy some of the last rays of this warm season! Sunshine is the best way to provide our bodies with Vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for your immune system to work well. We’re meant to be outside, so take advantage of the good weather when possible. Have lunch outside, take a break by taking a walk. Even just 15 minutes of sunshine will get your daily requirement of Vitamin D
